This paper summarises comprehensive analysis of technical status data for major gas pipelines including their systemlevel and structural reliability, stress corrosion, prospects for high-strength pipes, diagnostics efficiency, and other issues. Regarding the reliability, it is believed critical to address methodologies based on a decomposition principle. In engineering terms, we focus on diagnostics task setting and in particular on status analysis of most challenging pipeline segments. Two individual research issues were highlighted: stress corrosion fracture studies and high-strength pipe applications. Special emphasis was placed on gaslines operating in Far North environment. We concluded that field studies remain key to sustain long-term operation of high-pressure gas pipelines.
