Designing foundation pads for liquid hydrocarbon tanks

This paper summarises recent estimates for foundation pad deformations applied to tanks ranging between 1,000 and 50,000 m3. These calculations were centred on analytical studies by M.I. Gorbunov-Posadov and specifically addressed circular basements under linear elastic deformation. Reinforced concrete plates for such tanks were concluded to fall into an absolutely flexible category. For some tanks and soil conditions, however, differential settlement in the basement plate centre and periphery could likely exceed admissible levels. It was concluded that five wells and five static probing points appear to be insufficient for reliable tank heeling prediction in cases of uneven basement cross-section.
