Computer model helps assess efficiency of gas compressor design modifications

This paper summarises a computer model used for assessment of gas compressor design modifications efficiency. A UMPOs AL-31ST gas turbine engine was chosen for this test. A 3D CAD-based model was built, together with a gas flow simulator running on ANSYS CFX software. The project aimed to assess potential implications of computational matrix parameters and boundary conditions for solution stability. A dedicated application helped us visualise the model results in a virtual reality laboratory. This enabled us to demonstrate various outcomes potentially achievable with machine design modifications and better assess the key working processes while representing the findings in a self-intuitive way, in a user-friendly environment.
