Stress assessment methodology for faulty pipeline welded joints

This paper addresses the chosen practices for assessment of bending stress impacts under inspection pigging of gas pipes where faulty welded joints have been identified. The proposed methodology assumes bending stress ranking by three key groups: elastic distortion zone (normative stress), plastic zone (non-normative stress), and elastoplastic zone (mostly non-normative stress). In addition, due to uneven bending stress patterns across pipeline section, zones with highest tension, normative, and compression stress could be identified. In the normative zone, weld danger extent was assessed using steel low-cyclic fatigue criteria which helped us justify estimated remaining service life. The elastoplastic zone mainly relied on existing normative regulations.
