Well drilling in East Siberia: Key issues and solutions

This paper focuses on analysis of numerous process technology issues emerging under well drilling in East Siberia. Using several examples of major fields there, it analyses the main phases typical of well drilling in challenging climate conditions. In particular, it indicates total time requirements for each key individual process operation. It explains why it takes such a long time to develop these resources in the target region and why West Siberia has so far demonstrated 23 shorter well construction periods than East Siberia has by now reported. In addition, among other critical aspects, the paper indicates the core underlying causes for such relatively longer well drilling project turnarounds and highlights some viable process optimisation guidelines.
