Space-based geological and environmental oil and gas monitoring across Arctic and sub-Arctic regions

Korniyenko S.G. (Institute of Oil and Gas Problems of RAS, RF, Moscow)

E-mail: spaceakm2@ogri.ru

IPNG RAS developments are focused on science fundamentals  of aerospace, geo-environmental, and geotechnical monitoring in upstream oil and gas facilities across Russian Arctic and sub-Arctic territories. The primary tasks include soil ice content, landscape shifts and permafrost-air heat transfer
assessment, along with hazardous local geo-cryological process sourcing and prediction. The paper substantiates and provides testing summary for a new icy soil heterogeneity assessment methodology based on infrared data inputs. It highlights the underlying principles and provides examples of
many year-long, multispectral satellite imaging tools required for building multifactor tundra transformation models used to assess heat-affected area stabilisation periods. It was found possible to make use of different-time, ultra-high spatial resolution space images to locate local affected zones in terms of soil and vegetation cover moisture profiles for pipeline construction areas. Remote sensing prospects and current issues are addressed as well.
